Cat Businesses vs Dog Businesses
Excerpt from Survival First
There is always a chance that you can be separated from your business without warning. What happens to your business depends on how you’ve set it up.
Your business is cat-like or dog-like. You can’t leave dogs alone. They need to be fed, taken out for walks, played with, cuddled, and cuddled some more. You’d be rightfully shamed if you went on vacation and left your dog alone. Dog like businesses are sensitive to you leaving.
Cats are the opposite. They’re feral assassins more than capable of fending for themselves. Cats don’t give a fuck about you. To a cat you exist as a part-time food source and passive amusement. A cat-like business will run fine without you.
How do you know which yours is? There’s the guess test. How long do you think you can be away from your business before freaking out? The longer you think you can stay away, the more cat-like your business is. Then there’s the know test. How much time can you actually spend away before things start falling apart?
You can find out by doing a few stress tests.
A location stress test is where you work from somewhere other than where you normally work. Take a work-cation and see if you can be productive somewhere else.
A time stress test is when you work less or not at all. Take a vacation and do as little work as possible. See what breaks or slows down and what works just fine. See how long you can stay away from your phone/laptop.
